How Does Location Tracking Work on TickTalk 5?
TickTalk uses multiple location technologies to help provide the most accurate location available.
Depending on signal conditions, the watch may use:
- GPS
- Wi-Fi positioning
- Cellular tower positioning (LBS)
The watch automatically selects the best available location source based on the surrounding environment.
How Do I Locate My Child's Watch?
Your child's current location appears on the main map screen when you open the TickTalk App.
To request an updated location:
- Open the TickTalk App.
- Tap the Pinpoint icon on the map.
The watch must be online using either cellular service or Wi-Fi to provide updated location information.
What Is Tracking Mode?
Tracking Mode automatically updates the watch location throughout the day.
To enable Tracking Mode:
- Open the TickTalk App.
- Go to Parent Portal > Location Tracking Mode.
- Select Tracking Mode.
When enabled:
- The watch automatically updates its location approximately every 10 minutes.
- Route History becomes available.
- Battery usage may increase.
What Is Power Saving Mode?
Power Saving Mode helps extend battery life by reducing automatic location updates.
To enable Power Saving Mode:
- Open the TickTalk App.
- Go to Parent Portal > Location Tracking Mode.
- Select Power Saving Mode.
When enabled:
- Location updates occur only when requested from the TickTalk App.
- Battery life may improve.
- Route History is not available.
How Do I View Route History?
Route History allows parents to review previously recorded locations.
To view Route History:
- Open the TickTalk App.
- Tap the Route History icon on the map screen.
- Select a start and end time.
- Tap Playback.
Important: Route History is only available when Tracking Mode is enabled.
What Is AI SmartPin™?
AI SmartPin™ is TickTalk's location improvement system designed to help improve location accuracy over time.
If you notice that a frequently visited location—such as your home, school, daycare, or another trusted place—is not displayed accurately, you can submit a SmartPin to report the correct location.
When a SmartPin is submitted:
- The correct location is securely sent to TickTalk.
- Our system compares the reported location with the original GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular positioning data.
- AI models analyze the location accuracy and positioning patterns.
- The submitted location may be used to improve future location accuracy for your watch and help improve location performance across the TickTalk platform.
AI SmartPin™ is especially useful for frequently visited locations where signal conditions may affect positioning accuracy.
Examples include:
- Home
- School
- Daycare
- Sports facilities
- Community centers
- Frequently visited family locations
Over time, SmartPin submissions help TickTalk better understand real-world location environments and continuously improve location accuracy and reliability.
Important Note
SmartPin does not instantly move or override your watch's current location.
Instead, SmartPin helps train and refine TickTalk's location intelligence systems while also helping improve accuracy for frequently visited locations associated with your account.
What Do the Location Icons Mean?
The TickTalk App may display different location source icons.
GPS
Indicates the watch is using satellite-based positioning, typically providing the best outdoor accuracy.
Wi-Fi
Indicates the watch is using nearby Wi-Fi networks to help determine location, especially indoors.
LBS
Indicates the watch is using nearby cellular towers when GPS or Wi-Fi information is limited.
Important Note
Location accuracy may vary depending on:
- Indoor or outdoor use
- Nearby buildings
- Cellular coverage
- Wi-Fi availability
- Environmental conditions
For the best location performance, we recommend keeping both cellular service and Wi-Fi enabled whenever possible.
AirTag vs. a Kids Smartwatch: What's the Difference?
An AirTag is a passive tracking tag — it has no screen, can't make calls, and relies on nearby Apple devices to relay its location. Your child can't reach you in an emergency, and you can't reach them.
TickTalk 5 is a wearable smartwatch with its own 4G LTE connection. Your child can call, message, and trigger an Emergency SOS from their wrist — instantly alerting you with their live location.
If you need to track a backpack, an AirTag works. If you need to stay connected with your child and respond to emergencies, TickTalk 5 is the more complete solution.
GPS Tracker vs. Kids Smartwatch: Which Is Better?
A dedicated GPS tracker tells you where your child is. A kids smartwatch like TickTalk 5 lets you stay connected with them.
A GPS tracker:
- Shows location only — no calling, messaging, or SOS
- Is a separate device your child carries, not wears
- Requires your child to be passive — they can't initiate contact with you
TickTalk 5 includes real-time GPS tracking plus:
- Two-way calling and messaging
- One-touch Emergency SOS with instant parent alert and live location
- AI SmartPin™ for continuously improving location accuracy
- All managed from the free parent app
If tracking alone is the goal, a GPS tracker works. But for parents who also want to communicate with their child and respond to emergencies in real time, a smartwatch is the more capable choice — at a comparable price point.
